Gaza Dress Pattern Review

Gaza Dress Pattern

I got this more for the embroidery notes than the actual pattern. Construction is very easy and it would lend itself to narrow widths of material. I found that I liked the neckline on the Gaza dress, but preferred the over-all pattern of the Syrian dress, which isn't as 'straight' and uses gussets for armhole ease, a bit of a later historical development.
Folkwear's size 18 on this is pretty true to size, although the straight lines of the garment might be problematic for larger women or those who are particularly curvy.
The embroidery/decoration notes are worth the price of the pattern.

Syrian Dress Pattern Review

Of Folkwear's 'Caravan' patterns, this is probably my favourite. The construction style is ancient but easily adaptable. The gusset armholes allow for plenty of ease and the sizing is true. For once, Folkwear's 2X really IS about a size 24, which was a delightful surprise.
Basic sewing is extremely easy and the instructions are crystal clear, easy to read and understand. It is possible to cut the front/back panel at the shoulders, if necessary. (A note which I wish Folkwear would include in their patterns---most 21st century seamstresses are unused to clothing without shoulder seams and there are occassions when the fabric is such that cutting a double-length is impossible.)
The embroidery/decoration notes are a fabulous treasure trove of history and design and well-worth the purchase of the pattern! I've made this twice now, once in very lightweight cotton using a leftover bit of a fat quarter to make a scalloped neck plastron instead of the triagular yoke. I also made this is mid-weight linen with a lot of appliqued decoration and machine embroidery. Both turned out brilliantly!
My only word of caution with this pattern is be careful of the weight of the fabric---even mid-wt. linen made the dress very heavy.

For crossing the deserts of Africa or the urban landscape, this flowing dress drapes gracefully from a triangular shoulder yoke that is a perfect canvas for needlework or fabric artistry. Pattern includes instructions for optional embroidery stitches and design motifs. Suggested fabrics: Crisp or soft fabrics such as lightweight denim, broadcloth, cotton, linen, lightweight wool. Traditional colors are black, blue, white, or red.

Used the pattern to make a dress for my "Pride & Prejudice & Zombies" themed engagement party. Previous to this, I had only sewed one other item on my brand new sewing machine. I was able to follow the pattern, and with a few "learning" curves, sew a wonderful, period dress! Thank you!

The image on the pattern package does not match the actual garment constructed from the pattern. When assembled, the cloak is not even across the hem, but breaks into elongated points in the front. I was dissappointed considering the price of the pattern.

Western Saloon Dancer or Can Can Girl Pattern Review

I made the sleeveless bodice with bustle, front drape and circle skirt. This was a very easy pattern for me to follow. I have been sewing for 15 years. I used metal boning on the side seams and front closure area. If you are not trying to do an accurate historic costume save major time by using long strips of velcro on all closures. I used cotton calico for the entire costume. Just a side note, even the version I made takes about 8 yards of fabric, if you do the ruffle skirt add about 5 more yards to amount. So make a muslin first before you cut into garment fabric.I found the sizing to be very accurate and directions were easy to read.

Sizes 6-26 ~ all included in the patternBodice, circle and gored skirts, petticoat, drawers, hat, and stockingsAll the components of the pattern Saloon Girl are separate and can be combined and layered as desired. The bodice is period correct, with the pleats in back designed to accommodate the bustles of the 1880's. The bodice is fairly modest to allow modern foundations to be worn underneath if you desire. You can always lower the neckline and narrow the shoulders for a more revealing look. feel free to substitute a chemise top and corset (pattern #100) for the bodice. It can be made with the 3/4 length sleeves or sleeveless. The drawers, both long and short, are period. The petticoat and the skirts are a circle skirt. The petticoat has 3 layers of gathered lace at both the inside and outside hem. The skirts can be made in a plain circle or gored circle, with or without ruffles. The overskirt with drape front and bustle back are period correct. The cape is 1/2 of a circle skirt. The hat is "costume construction" as most sewers today don't have access to felt hoods and hat blocks. The foam gives it a three dimensional look that approximates felt, though it can be made entirely of buckram if desired. Millinery wire enables the brim to be shaped. The stockings are copied from a picture of a prostitute shown in the Storyville video. Both horizontally and vertically striped stockings were worn. The pattern includes supply sources, a bibliography, and historical notes. Dress up like a B Western Saloon Girl or a Can-Can dancer and have fun. Twirling, kicking, sashaying, and kissing cowboys are definitely allowed!

Turkish Dancer Pattern Review

Turkish Dancer Pattern
Average Reviews:

I love this pattern! The 3 pieces are as follows:
The Jacket: very simple construction, easy even for a beginning seamstress. So far I've made 2 of these, one in upholstery fabric, one in drapery silk. Both are beautiful and the pattern lends itself easily to an evening jacket.
The Entari: again, simple construction and a good introduction to using darts for a beginner. I've done this 3x, twice in flowing fabrics, once in a cotton with more 'body'. Pattern is easy to cut and fit. Pinning all that bias tape for the hems isn't a lot of fun, but it does work. However, so does a narrow rolled hem, for those who do not want the headache of the tape, and I think it lends itself more to keeping the garment 'drapey'.
The Vest: this is the only piece that is Intermediate in difficulty. The princess seams, back and front, require easing/gathering or pleating the fabric, which may be challenging to beginners, but the instructions are very clearly written. I prefer making this lined as it gives the garment more body to support heavy trim. Lining requires hand-sewing the armholes but its worth the effort. I've made three of these, two in cotton, one in heavy velvet with a cotton back that is unlined.
Please note that Folkwear's 2X is a scant 16. However, resizing and customizing the pattern pieces is not hard with a bit of measuring. I resized all 3 pattern pieces to size 28W without any difficulty. I also recommend that one buy tracing paper and trace the pattern in the desired size rather than use the tissue---it's extremely fragile. As always, the historical notes for trim are fascinating.

Sew Liberated Patterns-Emmeline Apron Pattern Review

I looked at apron patterns from all of the standard companies (Simplicity, McCall's, etc.) and didn't find anything nearly as cute as this one. Not only does the apron turn out to be absolutely adorable with the added bonus of being reversible, but it's also incredibly easy to make with clear instructions. Took me less than a day to whip this one up. As I'm completely average-sized (height-, bust-, and weight-wise) it fit perfectly so the one size fits all sizing wasn't an issue for me, but I wonder how well it would accommodate other sizes, especially in the bust area. The only negative I see is the amount of fabric required. I didn't bother to cut the straps and accent strips on the bias since I was using a plain-colored fabric so I wound up using only about a yard of that. I do, however, wish there were an option to make the apron one-sided for gifts for friends I don't care that much about. That said, I'm sure I'll be reusing this pattern over and over to make presents.

Nessie, The Lass of Loch Ness, sewing pattern Review

I've made a lot of patterns by Jennifer Carson and can only sing praises for her. The patterns are easy to read and complete. They are creative and leave plenty of room for someone to add a touch of their own style to these patterns. Once you finish one of her patterns you will come back for more. If you ever have a question or concern, Jennifer, is willing to help you out.
As for this pattern, Nessie, is absolutely adorable finished. I used a batik felted fabric and it turned out great. The kids throw her around and it is holding up just fine. I plan on making a few more for the kids to play with.
