(More customer reviews)I needed a good quality machine for very regular (4+ hour/day) sewing when I bought this. It has not let me down. It did break when I tried (not on purpose!) sewing through 1/4" of metal. The service people at Sears are great at fixing these and I had it back good as new.
My FAVORITE feature of this machine is the push button available (not required) to start and stop the sewing and the speed control. It makes it easy to get a nice even stitch and makes it possible to sew in places where you don't have much space. I can even sew on the floor since I don't need my foot out for the foot pedal. This would also be very handy for a paralyzed individual without the use of legs.
The stitches are more utilitarian than they are decorative but they serve their purposes well.
The machine is nice and heavy which keeps it from bouncing around on the table when sewing. Very important. And all the gears are made of metal. This machine will last forever.

(More customer reviews)I received this machine as a gift 7 years ago, and have since sewed everything from cardboard, denim, upholstery fabrics, quilts, paper, etc on it, and it is still chugging along! It's wonderful because it's fairly lightweight and medium sized, so it's easy to transport. It's also very easy to learn on, I taught myself how to use it and had sewed very little previous to using this machine. It has three straight stitches and seven variations of zig-zag stitches, as well as settings for making a buttonhole; new machines have way more settings for different stitches, but I've learned to do a lot of creative things just with this amount. If you are a really serious sewer you may be interested in a fancier machine with more options, but this one is wonderful if you are okay with limited stitch options. Replacements for needles and the light bulb have been easy and inexpensive. I've recently been learning about how to reset the tension, and this has been the first time it's given me any issues. Read the whole manual before you begin using it, it will make you a better sewer and teach you how to take care of your machine so it lasts longer. I would definitely recommend this machine.

(More customer reviews)I was looking for an inexpensive mechanical machine and did a lot of research. This one had the functions I wanted, and had the best reviews I could find - very few poor reviews, actually, in all the places I could find sewing machine reviews on the internet. There aren't any here, so I thought I'd write one!
I got this machine in January, and have used it almost daily since then with no problems. The manual is great, and any snags I've run into have been easily solved - I've had to clean and oil it, since I've used a lot of linty material on it, but that's very easy to do and to be expected with lots of use!
It's much more quiet than my old Singer was. I don't have any complaints. There are features I'd like, but you have to buy a more expensive machine to get it all.
By the way, I paid about $170 for this with shipping. Search around a little for the best prices, they seem to vary widely.
