My son has enjoyed other products by this company (esp. the make-it rocket), but I would not recommend the knit-it sheep kit.

This machine is top notch and a bargain at the price. The many different stitches are very nice, but my favorite is the automatic button hole function! It sews beautifully and would be great for any seamstress to use.

Brother(R) VX1435 Mechanical Sewing Machine Review

(More customer reviews)I got this machine a year ago as a beginning sewer. I really loved it and was able to learn and make many things with it. I discovered and confirmed that sewing was going to be my 'thing'. I did not want my husband buying anything too expensive or fancy just in case I ended up not liking to sew.
Its a basic model and I don't need all of the fancy extras anyway. But now a year later, as my sewing confidence is growing and I am moving on to try new things, the machine stopped working right. There is some sort of problem with the thread. Its not the tension, I have tried everything. We have oiled and dusted it, changed thread, bobbins and fabric. The manual is terrible and not very helpful. The machine still runs but after a few stitches, the thread either breaks or comes out.
It may be a simple problem to fix but not something we can figure out. Since my husband got it for so cheap (and even on sale) he decided to get me a new one instead of paying to have this machine repaired.
We got a Husqvarna Emerald for $299. (a basic model) There is no comparison in how it runs its sturdier and even though its a basic model it has many nice extra features and the manual is great.
Having said that, there is no way that one year ago I'd have wanted a $300 machine not knowing if I would like sewing or not.
The Brother worked great and was easy to learn on, I just think it should have lasted longer than a year. 3 Months ago I probably would have given this 5 stars. Thats how happy I was with it until I started having these frustrating problems. (and an added note...a Husqvarna never needs oiling! How about that?)

Janome DC3050 Sewing Machine Review

(More customer reviews)I have worked with Janome (formerly know as New Home) machines for over 20 years. I think I have only seen one jam once! This machine I have owned for 5 years and it has been fabulous. I teach children's sewing lessons in my home, and this machine never jams, is super easy to use, and is great for ALL LEVELS OF SKILL! I have 4 of this model!
I love the speed governor for children, plus, it keeps me tidy too. The big draw for me with the kids is also the fact that the pre-set stitch buttons above the stitch diagram are so quick and easy. You don't have to worry about the particulars of a setting on a stitch, you just go right to it, be it zig zag or straight stitch or overcast, you jump right to it!
The automatic tension setting is another HUGE draw. This thing adjusts the tension by itself. I have rarely ever had to touch the tension dial, and then only for unique project purposes.
The machine will also lock your stitch for you when you start a new seam! You don't have to hit the reverse button and go back an forth if you don't want to. It makes your seam look so much more professional.
The only thing I would say that might even be close to negative, is that make sure if you are going to do an automatic button hole with the automatic foot, that you are fresh on the instructions. It is easy to do a couple of simple things wrong on the set up when you do this, but if you have just read your easy to read section of the manual on this, it is a breeze.

(More customer reviews)I have not been using this machine long, but I already love it. At first when I tried it I had trouble with the machine feeding itself the material. I was used to having to really guide the material along with my old machine. This machine does not like it if you try to push the material into it. All you have to do is put the material in and put the foot down and start to go. The machine does the rest. I am working on very delicate material and this machine just glides along with no problems.
Also hemmed up a pair of jeans with one the decorative stitches which was a blast. So far no problems with the machine. My husband commented first thing about how quiet it is.

This is an extreme convince because the price is the same or lower than you would pay if you went to a fabric store and it comes with machine bobbins. (More customer reviews)I bought a Brother digital sewing/embroidery machine in February that was a total DUD...I mean it didn't survive making one garment before it went Kaput and I'm still trying to get it fixed!
I bought this "little" machine as a "back up" and it is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to buy a bottle of sewing machine oil to oil it weekly (as the manual advised) otherwise it came fully equipped and it just purrs right along and does a great job of sewing on a variety of fabrics. I'm VERY HAPPY and it was 1/6 the price of Brother digital dud.

(More customer reviews)This is a great machine for the price. I am teaching my teenage daughter to sew and she is turned off by my clunky old Singer. So I keep that around for the tough jobs and use this new Brother for the light weight stuff.
The only major limitation of this machine is that it can't really handle heavy weight fabrics or multiple layers very well. There is no presser foot adjustment, so the foot can only be raised so much, and can't be adjusted for variable feed, depending on fabric thickness. There is only one setting. That means you need to use plenty of pins, and keep the old Singer around for the heavy duty stuff. Otherwise, a fun little machine.
