Despite being a novice sewer she did a great job, and she said it was very easy to make. The pattern is laid out on one large sheet and you cut out each "page" from the cover and batting (supplied). Each step is clearly outlined and a basic knowledge of sewing terminology is all you need. You dont' even need a machine, it can be done by hand if you wish.
You can ramp it up by adding piping or rickrack to the edges, decorating with buttons and bows or similar, or using decorative stitches on the seamlines. You could even add a bit of a quilting effect by stitching around figures in a matching color thread.
Two things she mentioned:
1. The "pages" are not straight on the pattern and it bugged her a little that this resulted in pages not quite matching. (The edge of each page is colored, and where the color ends and the neutral background of the backing fabric begins is supposed to be the sewing line, so you only see color when the pages are together. Doesn't work so well if the line is "off".)
2. The instructions tell you not to wash the fabric before sewing, but to wash the finished book. However, she says that she cannot get the wrinkles out despite multiple ironings. You may want to press the fabric (use a pressing cloth) before sewing, just to get it wrinkle-free.
However, if you consider that this is supposed to be a baby's book, minor details like these are not a problem and the end result is a large, sturdy book that can be read, chewed, scrunched, dribbled on, and washed as much as you (or the baby) desires.
Would make fantastic baby shower or baby birthday/Christmas gifts.
