Of Folkwear's 'Caravan' patterns, this is probably my favourite. The construction style is ancient but easily adaptable. The gusset armholes allow for plenty of ease and the sizing is true. For once, Folkwear's 2X really IS about a size 24, which was a delightful surprise.
Basic sewing is extremely easy and the instructions are crystal clear, easy to read and understand. It is possible to cut the front/back panel at the shoulders, if necessary. (A note which I wish Folkwear would include in their patterns---most 21st century seamstresses are unused to clothing without shoulder seams and there are occassions when the fabric is such that cutting a double-length is impossible.)
The embroidery/decoration notes are a fabulous treasure trove of history and design and well-worth the purchase of the pattern! I've made this twice now, once in very lightweight cotton using a leftover bit of a fat quarter to make a scalloped neck plastron instead of the triagular yoke. I also made this is mid-weight linen with a lot of appliqued decoration and machine embroidery. Both turned out brilliantly!
My only word of caution with this pattern is be careful of the weight of the fabric---even mid-wt. linen made the dress very heavy.
